Sacramento,
California
Sacramento’s great history began in 1839 when John Sutter settled at the
confluence of the American and Sacramento Rivers after receiving a
48,000-acre land grant from the Mexican Government. Gold was discovered in
1848 thirty miles east of Sacramento in the town of Coloma at Sutter’s Mill.
The Gold Rush was on. The news of the discovery around the globe brought
thousands to the area in search of fortune. Sacramento is the oldest
incorporated city in California. California became a state in 1850 and
Sacramento was named its capital 4 years later.
Sacramento is the seventh most populous city in the
state of California. The estimated population is 467,343 in the city and
almost 2 million in the greater metropolitan area. The Greater Sacramento
area has been citied as one of the five most livable regions and the city
was cited by Time magazine as one of America’s most integrated.
Working in
Sacramento
Despite a reduction in state government in recent years, the state of
California remains Sacramento’s largest employer with Governor Arnold
Schwarzenegger often spotted around town. Also, many federal agencies have
offices located in the city. In the 1990’s the region took on a growth with
high-tech companies relocating from the Bay Area. Intel, HP and other
companies offset the closure of several local military bases.
Climate
Sacramento has a Mediterranean climate with mild year round temperatures.
Summers are dry, hot and with very little humidity and an abundance of sunny
days. Rain falls only between November and March, with the rainy season
complete by April.
Living in Sacramento
The city has more than 120 city parks; bound by two rivers the water
recreation tops the list for outdoor activities. Salmon and steelhead
fishing, river rafting and boating can all be done on the waterways of
Sacramento and the Delta. Performing arts, music, theaters, galleries, and
museums are located in the mid town area of downtown. Professional
sports are represented by the NBA Sacramento Kings, the WNBA’s Sacramento
Monarchs and the River Cats - a Triple-A- baseball team. Annual events in
the area include the Jazz Jubilee, The California State Fair, California
International Marathon, and Gold Rush Days.
